My Twist Out, Ain’t Twist All The Way – A Modern Day Love Story
By Tiffany Smith @beauTIFFullyme
YouTube tutorials have a weird way of giving you a false sense of confidence. We ALL have a failed tutorial story. Oh, you know, the one where: You see the beautiful curls of very skilled YouTubers, and you think that you can do the same thing? The confident trip to the beauty supply store to buy all the items you need for your new-found slay technique. Then the countertop, full of the supplies that were recommended—your natural hair, wild and free. You press play, ready to quickly yet efficiently slay the style. Unfortunately, reality sets in. The timestamp on the video shows that you’re thirteen minutes in when it happens. The regret! The sheer dread of doing your hair. The realization that you made a severe lapse of judgment. You recognize you should’ve just rocked your puff for another two days instead of tryna be cute! The agony of an unsuccessful twist out! Sound about right?
Girl, we’ve all been there! That horror-story like scenario is one us black girls know all too well. I understand firsthand the struggle of having natural hair that you seem clueless about. I’m like, how can something that grows out of my scalp be so foreign? As a self-proclaimed untraditional, lazy natural, I wear more air-dried puffs than styles. Wig braids instead of twist outs. Meek Mill chic braids instead of fabulous Lemonade braids. Yep, that about sums it up! Sure, I like to keep my hair washed, conditioned, and in twists that stay hidden under luxury wigs. I love treating my hair with excellent products—black-owned beauty lines such as Design Essentials, Pattern Beauty, Melanin Healthcare, and Curlmix keep my locs growing and moisturized. My now, “armpit length” hair was primed and ready to be seen by the world.
Up until five years ago, I was a proud perm wearing woman, and NO ONE could convince me differently. Unfortunately, the breakage of my ends and the “hard water” in TX really took a toll on my hair. After finally having the courage to go into my local natural hair salon, I recognize that I need to cut my hair and allow it to grow. That experience taught me the importance of protective styles as I grew out my natural hair. Now? My natural hair is thick and healthy is as it’s ever been! If you’re like me, this time at home has you rediscovering and loving your natural hair. I’ve been rocking wigs and protective styles for the last five years, and between keeping my wig braids moisturized, limiting any heat, and of course, drinking my water and minding my business, my hair is flourishing! Problem? I have no idea what to do with it since my hair texture is a stranger to me. During this pandemic time, I decided I would invest the time and energy to learn my hair texture. I genuinely want to take advantage of wearing my natural locs and primarily focusing on styles that won’t pull on my growing edges or break my newly healthy hair. The responsibility of not only taking the care of my hair but also having the ability to make it look beautiful is goals. I’m happy to announce that after weeks and months of manipulating my hair with different products and styles, I have found solutions to making my hair as gorgeous as I know it’s always been. Do I still have days that my twist out, decides not to twist? Sure! And that’s ok! Don’t stop! Continue to test and try out styles on your hair. Eventually, you’ll train yourself and your hair on how to perfect your favorite looks. Loving your hair and finding ways to manipulate it without damaging is a journey. Take your time and give yourself grace when discovering the secrets of your hair.
We’ve all had that twist out that didn’t quite twist out Sis, don’t stop trying to learn your beautiful hair texture! Wear that crown and love that beautiful head of hair. Remember to drink your water, treat your hair to amazing products, and choose styles that are easy on your edges and roots. Continue to be good to your hair and watch how your hair will be good to you.
